A 'Not to be missed Restaurant'!!! During our stay in Padstow we ate out at many restaurants, including The Basement Cafe and Rick Stein's Sea Food Restaurant. To put it in simple terms, The Basement Cafe won hands down. The food was exceptional, as it was at the Sea Food Restaurant, however The Basement Cafe was leaps ahead on atmosphere, service and value for money. For what we had to eat, I would have been happier to pay the £170 for a meal at The Basement Cafe rather than at the Sea Food Restaurant. If you go to Padstow, you've got to visit The Basement Cafe; oh and you MUST try the oven baked skate wing... delicious!!!!!! Thanks guys, and we WILL be back!!!

Watch out Stein! We ate at two of his restaurants and in comparison to The Basement Cafe he has a lot to live up to. We paid over £100 at one of his places and yet more or less the same meal at the Basement Cafe was around £55.

Superb! So unassuming as an evening bistro. The food was so simple but yet so fresh. I had a goan monkfish curry which I saw being cooked in the open kitchen the aromas that were coming out were mouth watering. On speaking to the chefs after they assured me that everything was prepared on the premises and sourced locallly.

We have eaten at The Basement Cafe every year for the past 2 and this year all I can say is wow!!!! They have added a really trendy alfresco dining area outside with perfect views over the harbour. The evening menu is stunning so simple but so good. The freshest of fish accompanied by a lush bottle of wine in surroundings of the continent - what more do you want. We did not get a chance to sample the breakfast or evening menu but looked as good. Amazing and recommended to all who visit Padstow. I would book for the evening though as we tried to get in twice on the off chance and they were full for two to three days in advance we only just got a table on our last night...

We first discovered The Basement Cafe whilst on holiday in August 2003. It turned out to be our favourite meal of the whole week even though we had eaten at two of Mr Stein's establisments. We have since been back a few times in August 2004, once for breakfast sitting outside overlooking the harbour and twice for an evening meal. The food, service & location are all excellent.

Upon arriving at The Basement Cafe, we were greeted by a warm smile and inviting environment. We decided to sit outside on the new decking which was a great choice. From the decking we were able to sample the atmosphere of both the town and the restaurant. Initially we were recommended a superb bottle of wine whilst we viewed the exciting menu. I chose an innovative chicken dish and my partner the perfectly simple 'Fish no Fuss', both were excellent. We both thoroughly enjoyed the evening and would recommend anyone to go in and enjoy the venue and the food.

Absolutely amazing - such a great atmosphere, no fussing around just good quality fresh seafood at affordable prices - a rare find in Padstow these days. Highly recommended especially now with their outside heated tables overlooking the harbour. Apparently the umbrellas are all weather!!! making the harbour views accessible from this cafe/bistro even when raining.
